Frog lessons

Hi everybody.

How are you?

I had a pretty great morning. I went to a local pond before sunrise to listen to the frogs. I got there just in time. The frogs were super loud at first, and got quieter as the sun came up. When I first arrived at a little before 7:00, they drowned out most of the noise from the highway, but when I left at about 7:20, it was getting light out, and most of the frogs had stopped calling. There were, almost definitely, peepers, and I'm trying to confirm via my naturalist friends that I heard some gray tree frogs as well. I'll let you know.

After I left the pond, I walked through the woods to the meadow. I heard lots of birds, including my first phoebe and field sparrow of the season. And I went to the vernal pool to look for salamanders, but I wasn't wearing the right shoes, so I'll have to go back later in the week. I was happy to see water in the pool. Last time I was there, it was completely dry.

Anyway, here are some pictures from my early morning walk.

Duck. Duck.
Geese.

I bet there are so many salamanders in there.
The two videos below are from my frog walk. What you hear in the first, I'm fairly certain, is a chorus of mostly peepers. You can also hear the highway noise, which is coming from just behind that row of trees. So, you can tell just how loud the frogs are in comparison. The birds you hear are red winged blackbirds, who like to hang out in the grassy reeds on the side of the pond.

The second video features what I THINK are gray tree frogs. Their sound is more of a trill, while the peepers have a single tone. American toads also have a trill-y call, but I think theirs lasts longer. So for now, I'm going with gray tree frog. Thank you, Duck Duck Go.

Please know that I am making an educated guess here, and I cannot confirm any of this.
YET.
But I'm working on my frog ID skills, so I'll keep you posted. Hahaha...Learn along with me!

Today's action item is to call your senators about the CR that the House passed yesterday. Please check 5calls if you need help with what to say.
There is also a call out for people to send postcards to trump at the White House, letting him know what you think of all this. Everyone is asked to mail them out on Saturday, the 15th, so they arrive in a massive wave. You do not have to put any identifying information on the card. I might go on the Walgreens website and make a nice postcard out of the photo of the one finger salute I showed you guys yesterday.

I am telling you, I feel like a new person after spending time with those frogs this morning. Get outside if you can. Don't look at your phnoe while you're out there. Just pay attention to the things around you. It can be pretty magical.

Onward.
