Frog lessons
How are you?
I had a pretty great morning. I went to a local pond before sunrise to listen to the frogs. I got there just in time. The frogs were super loud at first, and got quieter as the sun came up. When I first arrived at a little before 7:00, they drowned out most of the noise from the highway, but when I left at about 7:20, it was getting light out, and most of the frogs had stopped calling. There were, almost definitely, peepers, and I'm trying to confirm via my naturalist friends that I heard some gray tree frogs as well. I'll let you know.
After I left the pond, I walked through the woods to the meadow. I heard lots of birds, including my first phoebe and field sparrow of the season. And I went to the vernal pool to look for salamanders, but I wasn't wearing the right shoes, so I'll have to go back later in the week. I was happy to see water in the pool. Last time I was there, it was completely dry.
Anyway, here are some pictures from my early morning walk.
Duck. Duck.
Geese.
I bet there are so many salamanders in there.
The two videos below are from my frog walk. What you hear in the first, I'm fairly certain, is a chorus of mostly peepers. You can also hear the highway noise, which is coming from just behind that row of trees. So, you can tell just how loud the frogs are in comparison. The birds you hear are red winged blackbirds, who like to hang out in the grassy reeds on the side of the pond.
